Story is the account the mind builds around what happened, what it means and what is likely to happen next.
Stories organise experience. They carry memory, identity and expectation. They can also become so familiar that an interpretation begins to feel like the event itself.
The journeys do not ask the reader to live without story. They make room to notice how sensation became explanation, and whether the explanation still fits.
Different from: fact. A story may contain facts, guesses, inherited rules and remembered meaning at the same time.
