Agency is the capacity to participate in what happens next.
It does not mean total control. Circumstances, history, bodies, relationships and material limits are real. Agency appears inside those realities as the ability to notice, choose, refuse, begin, stop or make one response less automatic.
In the journeys, agency often arrives before confidence. It may be the second before repetition in which another move becomes available.
Different from: independence. Agency can include asking, receiving, collaborating and depending on others. It is not the performance of needing no one.
