The After

Source status: book-authored SHJ term in Pleasure Is My Medicine.

The After is what remains when an experience has passed its most intense point.

It may feel settling, connected and quietly complete. It may feel hollow, agitated, costly or unfinished. Often it is mixed. In Pleasure Is My Medicine, the After matters because the peak does not tell the whole story of whether an experience nourished you.

The After is information, not an infallible verdict. Tiredness, context, expectation and circumstance also shape what follows.

Different from: regret. Regret is one possible response. The After is the wider physical, emotional and relational residue.
